Leggings are back: Leggings and footless tights have made a fashionable comeback from the 1980s, and are now considered a staple accessory in every woman's wardrobe. First seen on the skinny legs of such fashion catalysts as Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins, many shot a disappointed gaze at the 80s throwback that refused to pass. "Leggings? Really?" we thought to ourselves. "What's next? Neon bicycle shorts?" Not quite bicycle shorts, (even though the fashion magazines did try to convince us otherwise for a month or two), but we have been embracing every shade and form of the cropped lycra pant, thankfully keeping hemlines above the ankle and below the knee.

Beyond black leggings: Leggings started out black, peeking out from tattered denim mini skirts, exposing a few inches of skin before the legs were swallowed up by a pair of vintage cowboy boots. Opaque black leggings have now found trims of ruffle, lace and bows, and have traveled the rainbow from vivid reds to midnight blues. Polka dots, tiny hearts, and animal prints are wrapping themselves around thighs and calves, while pinstripes, zebra prints and even skulls speckle our flashy legs in footless tights.

"Trendy, adorable, slimming and stylish, short, long and fancy leggings, footless tights, and cropped stockings have fashionistas everywhere locked into legwear"

Undergarment genius Sarah Blakely has even created Spanx control top leggings and low rise footless tights!

How to wear leggings: When sporting leggings, be prepared to assure people that you're quite aware - and proud - of your style statement and have not in fact lost the bottom half of your garment. While the fashion savvy applaud your adorably of-the-moment legwear choice, the style skeptics will toss you quizzical eyebrows and frown down their noses at your stretchy accessory. Be not discouraged; those fashion haters are merely jealous of your trend courage and style success.

Leggings are an accessory: For the sake of keeping your pride intact, read this paragraph thrice, write it down, and then put it firmly to memory. Slipping into leggings does not replace the act of wearing pants. Ever. Pairing a skimpy tunic or hip-length top with a pair of black leggings does not constitute an outfit. Ever. Your bottom should never (ever) be visible when wearing leggings. Ever.

Wear leggings under short skirts or dresses: Consider your leggings - be them cropped tights or spandex pants that hit you right under the knee - an accessory, not an essential clothing item. Slip a pair under a sturdy mini (think corduroy, denim or wool) or have them peeking out from a seasonally stylish jumper or skirted overalls. Do not, however, replace your skirt or jumper for

leggings, leaving you nearly naked.

Do not wear leggings under pants or shorts: And while leggings look just darling under skirts, they look repulsive under anything with legs. Gauchos, capris, short-shorts, Bermudas - none of these otherwise adorable pant options deserve to be massacred with the likes of your leggings. Stick to skirts and dresses, and keep your hemlines above the knee.

Leggings moderate hemlines: Keep in mind that opaque leggings give the tiniest of mini skirts a humble touch and dangerously high hems will suddenly become more appropriate. That being said, a cheek-peeking band of a skirt, matched with a skin-tight shirt, a pair of leggings and your highest pumps, screams an 's'-word that sure isn't style.
Leggings Keep You Warm: And in cooler temperatures, these slimming footless tights – especially textured or velvet leggings - will be providing you with a little extra insulation and a whole lot of style.
